FERNANDO SANCHEZ CASTILLO

In “Guernica-Syndrome” Castillo is dealing with the meaning of authority and memory, as well as its material representation as he compressed the massive Franco-yacht into transportable cubes and so into an art object.

As the spanish government still tries to hide relics from the Franco-Era in order to silence its fascist regime, it is almost impossible for Castillo, to display his work domestically.

What remains gallery modified “Guernica-Syndrome” through utilizing Munich rather than Spain as the “Hauptstadt der Bewegung” and thus a shipping harbor for the Franco-yacht artwork. In doing so, relics of a common fascist past are confronted with a modern day reanchoring of consciousness here in Munich. The gesture of support for Castillo’s work is to prove the political and cultural inheritage of our european society.

For this lying-in-state, the former nazi-building Kunstpavillion was transformed into a drydock in order to offer this bulky relic of the spanish history a temporary storage. A twist of past fascism between different cultured european lands with a modern awareness.
