AKRAM ZATAARI

A fictitious institution.

A type of laboratory.

A think-tank.

A project.

A justification.

what remains gallery is defined by a constantly changing appearance and as such is not bound to real space.

Primarily it is an idea. Within this idea, we work with objects, relics and ideas themselves, all of which are derived from the sphere of art and culture, and all of which already function as independent pieces of art. Name-dropping is certainly a keyword here. When a wellknown artist exhibits some- thing, what they are exhibiting is of secondary importance. The material is already afflicted by their name. From this perspective, we developed our first what remains gallery show out of an Akram Zataari installation. At that point, we took material left over by Liam Gillick, Lutz Bacher, Scott King and Duncan Campbell at the conclusion of an exhibition at the Kunstverein in Munich. When later exhibited by ourselves, this material was nothing more than a collection of names and relics. We created a temporary space which was transformed through this ‚name afflicted material‘ into a space loaded with meaning. Outside of the institution of Kunstverein, all these relics are brought into a new context, a context within which no one would normally come into contact with art.

Suddenly, all these names are there, and with them comes meaning.
