CHRISTIAN PHILIPP MÜLLER

what remains gallery shows Christian Philipp Müller” is facing the conditions and circumstances of contemporary art production by showing two hangmates. Instead of producing a new art piece, a existing one is merely deconstructed in order to elude the competitive environment of the award-exhibition of the city of Munich. This gesture as to be seen as an artistic practice illustrates the hackneyed relations between artists and the impact of the institutions.

Since after the fail of “dematerialisation of art” in the 70s one seems to agree about the fact that every artistic expression has to be conveyed over some kind of medium, the necessity for research on these mediums is even stronger. Paradoxically the view on the pure idea of a conceptual art piece gets even less diffuse when you figure out first the effects and characteristics which go with the medium. By releasing the medium from its context and its artistic embedment one can separate the tangible aspects in order to uncover its transfiguration.

This shows that its not the artistic idea but the material itself which functions as a projection scene for the pop cultural phenomenons of the cultic, fetishised and lobbyised genesis of meaning in our contemporary art production. This awareness intensifies the recurring demand of Art as a critical authority to ever and anon question its own established mechanisms of production and reception by paying a longer attention to our fugacious excess.

In the context of the critical reconstruction “what remains gallery shows Christian Philipp Müller” Haus der Kunst was not ready for any official opinion.
